Meet Sustaira: Riccardo Bergamini, Exploring Sustainability Through Technology
We’re excited to welcome Riccardo Bergamini to the Sustaira team as our new Jr. Sustainability Analyst.
Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree focused on sustainability and project management, Riccardo is particularly interested in the intersection of sustainability, technology, and data. Having lived in Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan, he also brings a genuinely international perspective and a curiosity for understanding how different cultures approach the challenges we face.
We sat down with Riccardo to learn more about his journey, what brought him to Sustaira, and how he sees technology contributing to a more sustainable future.
Where do you call home?
I’m Italian, from Bologna, so I have a strong emotional attachment to the city. However, over the past three years I’ve lived in both the Netherlands and Tokyo.
At this point in my life, home is wherever I feel comfortable. I don’t have one specific place because I enjoy moving and I’m not ready to settle in one location yet.
Every place I’ve lived has shaped who I am today. I want to keep exploring, learning from different cultures, and experiencing new perspectives as part of my personal growth.
What drew you to Sustaira?
I’m currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree focused on sustainability and project management, so Sustaira immediately caught my attention because it brings together two areas that I see as increasingly important: sustainability and digitalisation.
I see a lot of potential in combining these two fields. Technology can help turn sustainability ambitions into practical action, and I wanted to be part of that process and contribute to this intersection.
What’s your role at Sustaira, and what excites you about it?
I’m joining Sustaira as a Jr. Sustainability Analyst, where I’ll contribute across the intersection of environmental data science, customer success, and software product management.
What excites me most is the opportunity to understand how sustainability challenges can be translated into practical digital solutions. I’m looking forward to learning from different teams, working with real-world sustainability data, and seeing how technology can help companies make better decisions.
What does sustainability mean to you, personally?
Through my studies and experiences, I’ve realised that sustainability is a concept that has been central to human history, but somehow became less embedded in modern life.
For me, sustainability means living within the boundaries of nature and respecting the resources around us. It isn’t something limited to energy, emissions, or industry. It is also present in our everyday choices and decisions.
That broader perspective is what makes sustainability such an interesting field to me.
What role do you see technology playing in accelerating sustainability goals?
I believe technology is an essential part of the human journey, and it can play a major role in accelerating progress on sustainability.
It can help scale environmental innovations, support the transition to cleaner energy, improve the way we manage data, and automate processes that would otherwise require significant manual effort.
Sustainability is essential for modern society, but reaching our goals requires us to move faster. I believe technology can be one of the factors that helps companies turn ambition into action more quickly and effectively.
Tell us a little about yourself. What are some fun facts or things people might not expect?
I love learning and experiencing what different cultures have to offer, especially when it comes to food and human connections.
I find it fascinating to see how different cultures can approach the same problem from completely different perspectives and arrive at solutions that reflect their own experiences and ways of thinking.
I’m also a huge coffee lover. Whenever I have the opportunity, I like trying different coffee blends and discovering new coffee cultures.
The best coffee I’ve had so far was in Kuala Lumpur. But, as an Italian, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for a good espresso.
