Earth Day 2022: Invest in our Planet
Happy Earth Day! Today is dedicated to acting as a reminder for all of us to protect the environment, repair damaged ecosystems, and to live a more sustainable life. At Sustaira, Earth day speaks to the core of what we do. Today, we celebrate our planet, the creatures on it, and reflect on how we can be better to our Earth and enable others to do the same.
This year, Earth Day’s theme is “Invest in our Planet.” This theme is focused on changing the business climate, the political climate, and learning about how we can take action to preserve and protect our health, families and livelihood.
The History of Earth Day
The first ever Earth day occurred in San Francisco in 1970 after a Senator of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, announced the idea of a teach-in on college campuses to raise awareness of the environmental issues the world was facing at the time. According to Earthday.org, Gaylord had been concerned about the environment for a very long time and had felt inspired by the student antiwar movement and the growing consensus that air and water pollution was a massive problem. Over the following decades, Gaylord Nelson teamed up with congressmen, activists, and various other groups to make Earth day a global movement and holiday. Today, April 22nd 2022, marks the 52nd anniversary of this event.
How do we celebrate Earth Day?
There are many ways to fight climate change, live more sustainably, and make our impact a positive one. At Sustaira, it all starts with one. One discussion, one application, one choice, one change. We are seeing policies across the globe go into effect to protect our planet and correct the damage that has been done. These policies such as The EU Taxonomy, the recent SEC regulations, Biden’s Build Back Better framework, and others are the first of many to come and are already triggering change. This embodies the theme of Earth Day this year. Governments are engaging and business are changing the way they work to be more sustainable. We are actively investing in our planet and need to continue to do so.
For individuals sustainability efforts might be things such as:
Adopting a plant based diet
Limiting waste
Shopping locally and sustainably
Investing in planet-friendly organizations and institutions
Educating yourself and others
Avoiding “Fast Fashion”
Planting trees and plants native to your area
For organizations, efforts can be similar to that individuals and expand even further. After speaking with other organizations both big and small, local and global, being more sustainable can be actions such as:
Implementing a Sustainability and ESG framework or plan like the United Nation’s SDGs to guide your goals and KPI
Innovation and Investment into cutting-edge technology to help reduce impacts
Shifting to renewable energy
Evaluating your supply/value chain and partnering with organizations who are sustainable
Understanding and eliminating “Green Washing”
Hiring a Sustainability Director
